EUPHORIA + BRAIN BOOST + CELL REGENERATION - New Items to our shop!

Stop by our Shop Venus page to place your order. Until then…we're here to update you on our new plant medicine treasures.

Our previous loose leaf tea blends have been dismantled & rebuilt, with recipes specifically for: a brain boosting slumber; spells of depression; menstrual survival, as well as an anti-cancer blend and an immunity concoction for flue & cold relief. If you’ve exhausted yourself with feeling unbalanced and are curious about adding something truly beneficial to your health routine, it’s best to start with holistics and Ayurvedic medicine. Of course, please always check with your doctor. Holistic medicine is not FDA approved, and it most likely never will be.

In preparation for next year’s growing season, we’re selling seeds from our collection. For the moment we’ve prepared packets of Southern California’s Hummingbird sage (Salvia spathacea -pictured above), which has been unusually difficult to source and purchase since last year. A mystical tiny plant, spreading by creeping rhizomes, is native to Central California, and grows best beneath a tree (unless you’re by the coast). The entire plant is aromatic, and slightly sticky hairs tend to seduce those who come to encounter such a sweet (and medicinal) specimen. The dark pink blooms grow in clusters, high above the rest of the plant. Ethnobotanical properties: Salvia spathacea is used mainly as a stomach tonic, to soothe sore throats, and is a decongestant. A pollinator’s most desirable choice.

Also, although it was painfully complicated to harvest these specific seeds, we’ve managed to begin gathering a small batch of the Plectranthus barbatus. The “blue spurflower” is an evergreen perennial with soft fragrant leaves, and eerie electric purple blossoms. Native to Nepal, Ethiopia, and India et alia, the barbatus prefers dry, sandy soil. Ethnobotanical properties: In Hindu and Ayurvedic medicine the Plectranthus barbatus is consumed as a tea to aid in digestion issues, nervous disorders, as well as respiratory & circulatory ailments.

AND INTRODUCING… some other useful remedies -such as our powerful Mugwort pain-relief oil (and ghost repellant!) soothes deep muscle pain, we know —we use it daily, and so do our listeners & collaborators. The Mugwort (Artemesia douglasiana) is accompanied by Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) which has anti-inflammatory properties. Massage onto clean skin for aches, especially during menstruation.

But do keep in mind...it's not made for internal use, unless of course you'd like your unmentionable parts to succumb to your pineal gland and ignite a slight hallucinatory sensation? Lucid dreaming cunt?

SMOKING BLEND

Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) brings your wishes to higher powers and is mildly intoxicating. Verbascum thapsus (Mullien) assists with Asthma, headaches, coughing, pulminary issues, and inflammatory diseases. Horehound is an expectorant; loosens bronchial secretions, eliminates mucus, and stimulates the appetite. Tussilago farfara (Coltsfoot) releives a sore throat and the swelling of airways. Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium (also knows as Rabbit Tobacco or Ladies Tobacco) treats bronchitis, pneumonia. Looking for a tobacco substitute? You can also add mugwort, cannabis, or tobacco. Roll a nutritious fatty.

Our cell regenerating repair serum (for hands, face, and neck) is finally ready to distribute. Tired, unbalanced, sun-damaged skin been making you regret all those years you neglected caring for your thirsty epidermis? Perhaps there’s still some hope…we’ve included the following ingredients for our face oil - Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) improves scars, wrinkles, and sunburns. Artemesia douglasiana (Mugwort) is antioxident rich and anti-bacterial. Calendula officinalis encourages collages production in the skin. Lavandula angustifolia is a skin PH balance equalizer. The nefarious Matricaria chamomilla excelerates tissue renewal. Rose petals help to retain the skin’s moisture, and is rich in Vitamin C. Sambucus mexican (elderflower) contains Vitamins A, V, C, and E + helps to repair free radical damage. And Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) repairs skin’s cell damage. Slather generously into your thirsty epidermis.

NEW Adaptogen— Recently added to our loose leaf tea menu, as a stand-alone cognitive booster, is the Bacopa monnieri (available in late July). Referred to as the Ayurvedic Brahmi tea, or the herb of grace, she is native to the wetlands of Africa, India, Asia, and Australia...Brahmi translates to "sacred, holy and divine".

Bacosides, the main active compounds found in B. monnieri have been shown to neutralize free radicals, while preventing fat molecules from reacting with free radicals; when fat molecules have sex with free radicals, they undergo the detrimental process which is called lipid peroxidation -a direct link to several neurodegenerative conditions such as parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Studies have been shown that the Bacopa increases dendritic length and branching...dendrites accompany nerve cells in the brain that are most closely linked to memory & cognitive abilities.

Research does suggest that Bacopa’s ethnobotanical properties tend to ease anxiety, by reducing the levels of cortisol in the brain. Bacosides have been shown to eliminate aggressive brain tumor cells and inhibit the growth of breast and colon cancer cells (in test-tube studies). Chemically, Bacosides are dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins.

psst- be sure you are not consuming any thyroid hormones or fluoxetine (an antidepressant) if you are to add the Bacopa to your routine.

The importance of Mugwort —an essential herb to drink for a solution to one’s sleepless nights, low energy, upset stomach or menstrual bloating. Mugwort is known as “the keeper of dreams”, so surrender with care, as when smoked the pineal gland is activated. When brewed as a tea you will experience vivid dreams and euphoria.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out our updates. Head over to our Shop Venus page to place your order.

If by chance you’re have trouble with ordering directly off our site, let us know. When placing a bulk order it’s probably best (we’ve noticed) if you shoot us an email & Venmo us directly. Mészáros, Genet & Other Sudden Fevers - A New Years Eve Special

If identifying non-follicular organisms (i.e. exanthematous), Jean Genet’s burial site, shit jobs, and a box of wigs sounds like the evening you’ve been dreaming of —we’re excited you've chosen to situate yourself right alongside us.

Our episode departs from a collection of some unusual words from our archive, then moves on to the work of Hungarian filmmaker Márta Mészáros; with a focus on her feelings on the film industry, and her lonely masterpiece from 1975,  ‘ADOPTION’.  I took it in, twice in one day (like how I used to watch Tarkovsky in the 90’s). Only very recently was Mészáros’ work recognized, especially being shot during an era of rising conservatism in Europe…although Márta was in fact friends with Fassbinder.

We also read from one of our favorite trembling FICTIONAL WORKS, OUR LADY OF THE FLOWERS, BY Jean Genet, and of course we confess to other unmentionable habits and theories.

Stay until the very end of EPISODE #41 for tracks by Olen Puhunut, Elori Saxl, Kleenex/Liliput, Einsturzende Neubauten, Damon, Vaclav Neckar, Front 242, Radiohead (a few of our can’t-live-without-tracks), as well as Asha Bhosle, Henry Cow, Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Eva Pilarova, Space Cats, and other favorites from our archive.

We wish you the very best, whether you'll be slithering at a balanced pace or sailing off to new horizons —be well in your endeavors, and don’t eat any stale juniper berries.

NEW EPISODE - To Speak to the Wind

NEW EPISODE - STREAM OR DOWNLOAD HERE

#40 In den Wind reden (to speak to the wind)

is the wind lonely? and on the seventh day petals fell in petaluma.

Our latest episode also explores Lyall Watson’s essential nonfiction release, Heaven’s Breath: A Natural History of the Wind -with a focus on Chapter 8 ‘The Perception of the Wind’, which we love particularly because of Watson’s playful method of examining the linguistic roots of a whirlwind/vapour/breath et alia.

Our new episode also touches on the process of collaboration with one very menacing habit -procrastination. If there’s anything we can take away from the unfortunate happenings in the world around us, it’s that we must not surrender to the power hungry narcissists who desperately try and rule the tides. It’s our job to save the world. And it all starts with conquering procrastination.

Stay until the very end of EPISODE #40 for tracks by Panchiko, Plastic Venus, Kim Jung Mi, Harumi, J.T. IV, Freshly Wrapped Candies, Monomono, Rikki Ililonga, The High Windows, Giles Gorey, and other favorites from our archive.

We will, despite the venomous spread of utter abhorrence, continue to provide for you a sanctuary, and a place to pull inspiration from.

SINISTER HALLOW'S EVE CINEMA

The list is endless when it comes to our favorite Hallow’s Eve movies. We thought about the obscure, the unwatchable, and of course those spooky thrillers that are embalmed with absurdity. But the time came for us to sit down beneath the moonlight and fully realize our top 4 scary movies. So if you’re looking for something totally sinister to make your Samhain celebration more memorable, we’ve got you covered.

Fearless Vampire Killers (Polanski, 1967) is an absolute gem- Bumbling professor Abronsius and his clumsy apprentice Alfred are vampire hunters, who are summoned to put their skills to the test. One night they come across the innkeeper's daughter, Sarah (Sharon Tate), who is whisked away by Count Von Krolock (and his gay son Herbert), leaving the heartbroken & disgruntled Jewish townspeople no choice but to fight back or become vampires themselves. Oy! What a masterpiece.

Sharon's tragic fate, followed by Polanski’s awful disgrace does tend to weigh heavily on one's appreciation of this gorgeous film. We beg you still to indulge, as Fearless Vampire Killers is such a unique cinematic experience rich with that childlike wonder which is missing from the modern day horror genre.

I Lunghi Capelli Della Morte (The Long Hair of Death, 1964) is Antonio Margheriti’s eerie classic. Amidst a crumbling 15th century village, a woman is burned at the stake for her unspeakable witchy deeds. Although her lamenting older daughter knows the truth behind the execution - the lord's sexual desire for her mother. Barbara Steele’s performance is soul-stirring as usual, and the soundtrack is also quite bewitching. You can watch the full movie here.

Satanico Pandemonium (Gilberto Martínez Solares, 1975) is a sadistic Mexican nunsploitation piece that we’ve been obsessed with for decades. This forgotten cult classic puts the viewer under a spell. A young and admirable nun named Sister María (Cecilia Pezet) meets the devil in the forest and is tempted by visions of forbidden sexual fantasies, many which she puts to action. Although come prepared, as Satanico Pandemonium is tainted with plenty of blood and blasphemy!

And finally, we wanted to recommend LAMB —it’s a new horror film by Valdimar Jóhannsson. This piece is an emotional whirlwind, with an illuminated performance by Noomi Rapace + an equally as moving performance by Hilmir Snær Guðnason —from Baltasar Kormákur’s queer Icelandic dark comedy (circa 20 years back), 101 Reykjavík -which is a film we fucking absolutely adore + love to recommend, too.

ESSENTIAL READS - Analyzing the Genocide

Dear Friends —

Each eve & morn we meditate on a dream, that your loved ones are safe during this time.

We will, despite the venomous spread of utter abhorrence, continue to provide for you a sanctuary, and a place to pull inspiration from.

If you’re looking for literature on the struggle between Israel and Palestine, we urge you to seek out a copy of They Called Me A Lioness by Ahed Tamimi & Dena Takruri. Tamimi, a Palestinian activist jailed at sixteen after a confrontation with Israeli soldiers, illuminates the daily struggles of life under occupation in this moving, deeply personal memoir.

The Land of Hope and Fear, by Isabel Kershner, is also an essential recommendation. It’s here we encounter Israelis: Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, Eastern and Western, liberals and zealots — plagued by perennial conflict and existential threats, citizens who remain deeply polarized politically, socially, and ideologically.

thanks for keeping us close by. this earth and its creatures are going through a time of great confusion and simultaneously -a time of great reparation and healing.

with love & strength — Gina

LOST ISRAELI GEMS

We were looking around on Furious.com, and were able find some bits and pieces on the Israeli independent music scene —this movement began with Jerusalem based Fact Records; formed by Yoram Eliakim in August of 1999, on the platform of the Jerusalem record shop Balance, as an alternative for Jerusalem musicians who wanted to release small CD-R editions, avoiding bureaucracy and high expenses. At the same time, Fact Records (not to be confused with Japan’s Fact Records Shop) started to release re-issues of ‘classic’ underground acts, which were unavailable for many years, which you might have imagined.

We absolutely fell in love with Plastic Venus —lush, sexy, trashy and wild. We were thrilled to find a video of theirs online, and as time goes on (while we’re continuing to research their sounds) we’ll post a few more videos and most likely will share more of their music on upcoming episodes. But next, we did want to share a video we were able to locate from their album Roxen רוקס/ 8 circa 1991:

There was also a group from the 1970’s who we came to admire, although we can’t seem to find the right translation of the band’s name (if you know more on this specific album or group, please drop us a line!) This group was led by composer Yoni Rechter —and so far this is the one record we’re digesting in full:

There are a handful of other important musicians from Israel who we should pay close attention to as well, such as The High Windows, Efrat Ben Zur, Taapet, The Monks, Yarkon Bridge Trio, and then there’s Tsuky —who was a sound engineer from Ramat Gan (a Tel Aviv subvert) who released four albums. And, as a dedicated Can and Faust fan, Tsuky created a dreamy sort of melancholy version of Krautrock, by utilizing both computers and acoustic instruments. Tsuky’s albums have been pretty much impossible to find, unless we’ve just been going about our research all wrong…but we cannot find anything of Tsuky’s. We’re completely bewildered. And, disappointed. But we will keep the search alive until we come across at least a song or two.

Here’s one of our other favorite tracks, out of Israel, from The High Windows

If you’d like to know more about these bands out of Israel, come take a listen to our latest episode —which features the majority of the musicians we’ve mentioned above, except for Tsuky’s work unfortunately.

We hope your families are safe, and wish you much love & strength during this trying time.

Most Sincerely —Hey Venus Radio

NEW EPISODE - The Fool & L. Mauritianus

NEW EPISODE AVAILABLE TO STREAM OR DOWNLOAD HERE

“Man, incontestably the most advanced creature, has only to observe the flight of birds to realize the weight of the earth’s imprisonment.” For our end of the summer episode, we feature the filmic epilogue of a brooding ornithologist via 1970 -did the butterfly evolve from the rhinoceros? Most likely, she did not.

We include a short excerpt as well from The Dhammapada - an age old Buddhist text which reminds the reader of “the transience of life”; we focus on Chapter 5 ‘The Fool’ (a translation by Juan Mascaró).

NEW EPISODE- Opalescent Spider Balm

STREAM OR DOWNLOAD HERE

She sneezed and stubbed her toe back at the electric toothbrush counter, where she used to work as a dishwasher. Opalescent spiders twirl behind the milk cartons. Is she hallucinating all of this, dear internet? Hatching blindly toward obedience, a velvety balm pollinated the cycads (as their 16th century appetite had grown weary). For a little cash she bought a dewy meadowlark and a salubrious breeze, from some kids over by the pool table. "Peek-Ahh-Oooh" soliloquies belong to the Muscicapidae family.

Won't you join us, dear Venusians  -as we celebrate the tail end of this sizzling-summer with a few dreamy kinda favorites from our archive via the musings of Oisin Ruiz, Nala Sinephro, Pure X, The Limelites, etcetera etcetera
